As with many other types of cancer, colorectal cancer prognosis depends on how advanced the cancer is at the time of diagnosis. If colorectal cancer is diagnosed at an early stage when the cancer is still confined in the lining of the colon or rectum, surgical removal is highly curative.
If colorectal cancer is found when it has grown through the wall of the colon or rectum, or spread to other parts of the body, it is less likely to be cured. The survival rate of colorectal cancer is almost equal for men and women. Nearly 60% of patients with colorectal cancer survive at least 10 years.
The figure shows survival rates for colorectal cancer by survival time and sex for the US male and female between 1988 and 2007.
