So there?s been some hubbub about some?statements?Jennifer Hepler, a writer for BioWare, made in a 2006 interview; and now people are blaming her for the recent decline in the quality of games Bioware has put out. To hardcore fans of BioWare games, anything less than perfect is crap. I feel Mrs Helpner has nothing to do with Bioware resent decent into mediocrity. The true cancer that?s killing BioWare is?
Over-saturation!
Before I go on, I?d like to offer sincerest apologies on behalf of decent, respectful gamers everywhere to Jennifer Hepler. Ever since this image hit Reddit last week with the title ?the cancer that?s killing Bioware?, she and other members of the Bioware staff have been bombarded with hateful messages on Twitter, forcing Hepler to delete her Twitter account. All she?s done is state her honest feelings about video games in general. She?s just a writer it?s not in her job description to like playing video games. Story has always been one of Bioware strong suits. Having good writers on staff is important, regardless of whether they like video games or not. Would I prefer it if everyone involved in making a videogame enjoyed playing them? Yes, but I also know gaming skills and work ethic don?t often make good bed fellows. Hepler and others in BioWare?s employ are innocent victims of the real reason BioWare?s games are slipping.
BioWare has become a victim of it?s own success. Their name is synonymous with great RPGs. When EA bought them it was a boon for both companies; for BioWare it meant bigger budgets and more resources, for EA it meant having a brand name respected by gamers. In the years since the purchase EA has cracked the whip, so to speak, and that is when the quality of BioWare?s games started to suffered. Dragon Age is the obvious example. The decision to make it an annual franchise meant that they had much less time to polish Dragon Age 2 and it showed in the games reviews. Just recently Command & Conquer: Generals 2 was anounced as ?BioWares next game? when in fact a game studio known as Victory had been working on the game up-to that point. That studio is now known as ?BioWare Victory?, thus power of the BioWare name is being abused to help a failing franchise.
It?s the handling of their name and properties that?s killing BioWare, not the gaming skill and preferences of it?s writers, so please stop attacking Bioware employees. Instead, encourage EA to treat BioWare and its fans the respect they deserve.
